2006 and beyond
In July 2006 the Revd Dr Ruth Gouldbourne and the Revd Dr Simon Perry became the ministers of Bloomsbury.
As well as experience in pastorate, Ruth has been a tutor at Bristol Baptist College, a Whitley Lecturer, and a trustee and a visiting lecturer for the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Prague. Her doctoral research related to some of the more radical Reformation figures. She recently convened for the Baptist Union a major group study of church membership in today's context.
Simon was in the RAF when he heard the call to ministry. He studied for A levels on his own to qualify for college entry. His first pastorate in a rural village saw a small church really begin to grow. At Cambridge he found that joining the college's rowing club was instrumental in reaching students. He expects that making contact with the local community will continue to be an important facet of his ministry.
With Seyan Tills, our many-talented Ministry Assistant, to complete the team, the church with its distinguished past looks forward to an exciting future.
While Bloomsbury's ministry has necessarily been adapted to meet the needs of each succeeding generation, we trace a continuity in the open and welcoming spirit of this church, in the desire to respond to contemporary social and cultural concerns, and in the determination to preach the good news of Jesus Christ. The aim remains, as William Brock used to express it, the effective service of the current generation according to the will of God.

In 2006, as in 1848, Bloomsbury remains committed to serving the local community
and expressing the good news of the gospel in practical and inspiring ways. |
